USSR Repertoire (The Theory Of Verticality) by DJ Vadim

Released in 1996 on Ninja Tune. DJ Vadim is Russian born DJ / Producer. This is first full length album. The music on here is all instrumental trip hop / down beat, save for the odd vocal sample and the rap message someone left on his answering machine. It's all fairly dark and atmospheric. Very sedated and murky. DJ Vadim showcases a keen eye (ear?) for detail on Verticality. The tempos are very slow, the bass is really deep, there's plenty of textures and noise. Some of the tracks have a detuned jazz band playing in slow motion feel. Other tracks sound like background music for a murder / mystery movie. Vocal samples (including one of a pope) are slowed down and eerie sounding. Very spacey and sleepy. This album is super laid back and chill. Music for sitting a recliner, headphones on, joint in hand. The music is far from boring, all the minute details keep it interesting, no songs over stay their welcome. A good anti thesis to all the in your face, poppy rap music of today. Something a little more stylish and sinister. At 79 minutes, this album is a bitch to sit through though. An album this down tempo and long is bound to put some listeners to sleep. But they probably need the rest anyway. Not at all a bad debut. a few of my friends from high school are really into dj vadim. they’re all about weird electronic music so i always gave it to them. although they did turn me on to aphex twin and dj shadow back in the day. i had to review the new dj krush (or the one that came out four years ago) for this stupid website called ignoremagazine and i think they didn’t use my review because i said it was nineties music. no mc rapping sounds good to me. i hate that on electronic albums. great review as always!

Whoah that song at the beginning in the background sounds like “Marigold” by Nirvana/Dave Grohl……
