I think BT has a service called 1571 which is similar to voicemail on a mobile phone. Ring up the customer services and ask them how you go about getting the service – I have a feeling it’s chargeable but not overly expensive – it may be free though so will save money.
How can I arrange to get an answering machine/message bank on my home BT phone?

Or do I need to buy an answering machine?

Call 1571 from a phone that is touch tone, follow the prompts and you have a FREE answering machine. To pick up your messages, listen to your dial tone, if it is different either a broken dial tone or an alternating dial tone, you have messages, it’s that easy.
